Thomas Uhl schloß sein Studium an der Universität Heidelberg als Diplom Medizin-Informatiker ab. Währenddessen veröffentlichte er zwei Bücher zum Thema Linux (Linux - Vom PC zur Workstation / Linux Universe - Springer Heidelberg), das in mehrere Sprachen übersetzt wurde. 1994 gründete er die "Thinking Objects Software GmbH" mit Sitz in Stuttgart. Seit November 2001 ist Thomas Uhl Chairman der Linux Working Group der Guide Share Europe (GSE). Anfang 2003 wurde Thomas Uhl in den Vorstand der Topalis AG berufen. Er ist Gründungsmitglied des GNOME Deutschland e.V. und der Linux Solution Group (LiSoG).
