Time flies, they say. As I’m getting older myself, I can agree with that sentiment wholeheartedly, but nowhere is the acceleration of time more palpable than in the field of IT. And for anyone trying to navigate it, standing still is equivalent to falling behind.
Incidentally, do you realize that the very notion of “public cloud” is already nearly 20 years old? The cloud as we know it today began in 2006 with the launch of Amazon Web Services (AWS). To this day the company retains its position as the world’s largest and most popular cloud service provider, despite multiple dramatic shifts in the technology focus of the entire industry.
I can still vividly remember heated discussions from the past years about the feasibility of the multitenant model, the exact meaning of hybrid cloud architectures, or the fact that multi-cloud deployments are becoming a new norm. Over time, however, even the term “multi-cloud” has evolved. Once regarded as an enabler of architectural flexibility or vendor neutrality, it has become a strategic foundation for resilience, innovation, and compliance. The challenge has never been having access to multiple clouds; it has always been about making them work together meaningfully and without too many compromises.

The latest announcement about the general availability of Oracle Database@AWS is a bold response to that challenge, finally made possible by a strategic collaboration between Oracle and AWS after years of technological and business development. And unlike many overhyped cloud partnerships of the past, this one delivers on the promises that multi-cloud was supposed to fulfill all along.
A Familiar Database in a New Home
I’ve written about Oracle’s strategic multi-cloud partnerships with all major hyperscalers before. But Oracle Database@AWS is perhaps the most complete realization of the long-standing vision of “the same database everywhere.” Unlike traditional cross-cloud deployments that often introduce latency, data friction issues, and spiraling egress fees, this approach keeps everything within AWS infrastructure: compute, storage, and networking.
What both companies are now offering is essentially the Exadata platform and a choice of Autonomous Database and Exadata Database Service running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), physically deployed inside AWS datacenters. Not as a third-party managed service but fully integrated into the AWS environment. Customers can access it through the familiar AWS console, as well as APIs and command-line tools, and even procure it via the AWS Marketplace using existing enterprise agreements and discount programs.
Since the service runs natively in AWS, customers also benefit from integrations with AWS IAM, CloudWatch, CloudFormation, and other core services, creating a layered defense model that leverages both vendors’ strengths. With ransomware and GenAI data leaks among the top enterprise concerns these days, the ability to enforce data governance, minimize exposure, and simplify auditing has strong business value. Oracle’s Zero Data Loss Autonomous Recovery Service, for example, can be used to back up databases, providing a turnkey disaster recovery strategy without needing to move data out of the cloud.
Eliminating the Compromises of Traditional Multi-Cloud
Traditional multi-cloud deployments have always carried hidden costs. Data movement between clouds results in higher latency, higher egress fees, and greater security risks (which inevitably also puts organizations at risk of violating compliance regulations). Oracle Database@AWS eliminates those compromises by keeping everything within AWS boundaries.
From a technical perspective, this means organizations can run their existing Oracle Database workloads without rearchitecting their applications and without sacrificing high availability, performance, or security. There is no need to move sensitive data across clouds; everything stays within the same boundaries, governed by a consistent policy framework and protected by Oracle’s mature set of built-in security controls. Data can flow seamlessly between Oracle databases and AWS analytics and AI services. What used to take weeks of integration work and custom scripting can now be achieved in hours. Or even eliminated completely with the help of AI-powered automation.
Many enterprises still rely on complex, legacy applications that are tightly coupled with Oracle databases. Rewriting these apps for cloud-native environments has always been prohibitively expensive and risky. But with the new service, organizations can lift and shift these workloads to the cloud without major refactoring to achieve immediate performance and scalability boosts for their business needs. Adding modern capabilities like observability, continuous integration, or artificial intelligence can be implemented later at the organization’s preferred pace.
Cloud Agility Meets Enterprise Security
Security remains a cornerstone of Oracle’s value proposition. From Data Safe for sensitive data discovery and activity auditing to always-on encryption and SQL Firewall for runtime protection, the now generally available Oracle Database@AWS service inherits all the capabilities that have made Oracle databases a popular choice for mission-critical workloads in regulated industries.
For organizations concerned about feeding their data into generative AI tools or exposing internal applications to modern threats, these built-in protections offer both compliance assurance and peace of mind. Moreover, the zero-ETL integration between Oracle and AWS services dramatically simplifies the previously painful task of moving data between platforms. This makes it possible to perform analytics, train ML models, or run AI-driven workloads directly on data stored in Oracle databases without duplicating it or introducing new security risks in the process.
This new approach allows customers to combine the scalability and AI services of AWS, including Bedrock, SageMaker, and Amazon Q, with the latest innovations in Oracle Database 23ai, such as vector search and built-in machine learning algorithms. In short, Oracle is delivering on its long-standing promise of the same database everywhere, now not just expanding into but also deeply integrating with the AWS massive cloud ecosystem.
So, if you are still thinking about multi-cloud as an overly complicated and overly expensive approach that comes with a long list of compromises you have to accept, now is the time to reconsider. Yes, we probably shouldn’t call this new service multi-cloud, because it’s really two cloud stacks now contained in a single cloud service provider’s infrastructure. But ultimately, it is not about nitpicking definitions but achieving tangible benefits. Oracle is bringing its best capabilities to where the customers already are and doing so in a way that makes business, technical, and strategic sense.
