IAM (Identity and Access Management) consists of a wide range of capabilities. There are various functional areas, with IGA (Identity Governance and Administration), AM (Access Management), and PAM (Privileged Access Management) at the center, with several specialized or emerging capability sets around. IAM also needs to serve a growing number of identity types. It has evolved way beyond the traditional workforce focus of IAM towards supporting partners, customers, and non-human identities.
The growing scope of IAM in both functionality and identity types served also has led to an increase in complexity of IAM implementations. Organizations thus need to figure out how to modernize and expand their IAM capabilities while keeping control of the complexity. New trends such as decentralized identities add to that challenge.
In the past years, the Identity Fabric, created by KuppingerCole Analysts a couple of years ago, has established as a paradigm for taking an integrated perspective on IAM. A growing number of organizations has such a blueprint in place or is working on it.
Figure 1: Less than half of the organizations already have a comprehensive IAM Blueprint in place (Source: KuppingerCole Analysts).
While the Identity Fabric does not determine whether capabilities are delivered from a set of orchestrated IAM components or whether a suite covering a wide range of capabilities is at the center, many organizations show a tendency towards building their Identity Fabric around a very few core solutions that then are complemented by specialized tools for additional capabilities. Thus, the concept of the Identity Fabric focuses on as-a-service delivery for reducing the complexity of deployments and enabling elasticity and scalability.
IDaaS (Identity as-a-service) solutions covering a broad set of IAM capabilities are becoming increasingly popular. They provide an opportunity for organizations to cover a wide range of requirements with an integrated solution, reducing the complexity of deployment and the cost of integration.
One such solution is Evidian Orbion which is an integrated IDaaS offering covering IGA, AM, and PAM, but also providing support for various emerging areas such as decentralized identity integration or the utilization of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and ML (Machine Learning) for simplifying configuration and operations.
