The burgeoning number of non-human identities (NHIs), such as workloads, IoT devices, AI agents, and service accounts, is increasingly outpacing human identities, challenging conventional identity and access management (IAM) systems. NHIs, essential to digital transformation, have diverse lifespans and privilege levels, often generated automatically within environments like CI/CD pipelines and Kubernetes, which amplifies security vulnerabilities. Traditional IAM frameworks struggle with the dynamic and automated nature of NHIs, necessitating advanced approaches like the Identity Fabric that integrate NHIs seamlessly into IAM practices. Cloud Infrastructure Entitlement Management (CIEM) plays a pivotal role in optimizing access rights and promoting a least-privilege principle for NHIs. To tackle the complex lifecycle and entitlement challenges, robust cross-functional collaboration between IAM, security, and development teams is crucial for effective governance and policy enforcement. NHIs, while presenting challenges, also offer opportunities for enhancing cybersecurity and operational efficiency if managed through integrated and adaptive frameworks.
