Reality Check: What are the Worst Cases of Data Breaches that Happened in 2010?

Every year, Verizon Business publishes the Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR), which presents a unique view into how victims get breached, as well as how to prevent data breaches. The data is culled from forensic investigations carried out by Verizon Business and the U.S. Secret Service.

Participants to this session will learn what mistakes victims make that lead to a data breach, what techniques and methods hackers are using, how to prevent from getting breached, and where the attacks originate from. This session will also contain numerous cases and stories from the field, told by a forensic IT investigator.

The Verizon Business forensics team analyzes thousands of data points from investigations around the world – including many never publicly reported. The company uses its Verizon Incident-Sharing (VerIS) framework to collect the data, which is a publicly available framework that provides enterprises with a common structure for describing and analyzing security incidents. The U.S. Secret Service (USSS) is one of the organizations that has adopted the framework.

This led to the USSS sharing its data with Verizon Business for inclusion in the 2010 Data Breach Investigations Report. As such, this session offers a unique insight into data breaches around the globe from both a public and private sector perspective.
