Too Many Choices? Challenges and Proposed Solutions in Privacy Decision Making with the User in Control

Business Case Study
Tuesday, November 22, 2016 12:15—12:45

In today's reality, websites, apps, and sensors are collecting data about users without the user being in control. With the EU General Data Protection Regulation, the user is put back in control over how data is used as active consent has to be obtained for each specific use of data. However, with the large amounts of data that is available about users today, the number of privacy decisions that the user has to make can quickly become overwhelming. Hence, a key challenge is to empower users while maintaining usability.
In this talk, I will present concepts involved in privacy decision making and present an overview of possible solutions to preserving usability. In doing this, I will address amongst other things: cognitive load, habituation effects, privacy nudges, and personalized privacy assistants.
