The European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW) is dominating attention. However, focusing solely on EUDIW overlooks broader market adoption, current & emerging. The public sector and “qualified” trust service providers (as defined by eIDAS 2.0 and the ARF) will issue only a fraction of verifiable credentials. The vast majority will come from “non-qualified” businesses, spanning financial services, telecoms, professional certifications, and more. These corporate issued credentials are already outpacing government efforts in adoption, yet their role in the decentralised identity ecosystem remains underexposed.
Corporates need clear business cases and enabling payment infrastructure to justify the adoption of credentials, especially when issuing credentials equivalent to data they charge for, e.g. identity verification. Establishing monetary value for credentials is crucial for adoption, and will transform both ecosystem formation and the business models of all involved, including vendors.
This session will explore the monetisation models, value chains, and governance structures necessary to make decentralised identity a self-sustaining ecosystem. We’ll examine real world adoption trends and how payment models can align with eIDAS 2.0 to drive enterprise participation. The future of decentralised identity depends on unlocking commercial incentives, and it’s time to move beyond regulatory mandates to build a thriving marketplace for verifiable credentials.
