The web faces a critical inflection point: as AI-generated content proliferates and platforms demand increasingly invasive identity verification, we risk creating a digital environment where every interaction requires credentials—essentially a "papers, please" culture for the internet. This talk and panel examine how privacy-preserving approaches to personhood verification could help prevent this dystopian outcome while still enabling necessary trust.

The talk will begin with the introduction and evolution of the "Personhood" concept and the tradeoffs associated with different implementations, including the recently published Personhood Credentials paper, which introduces a framework for verifying humanity while preserving privacy. We'll explore new technical developments enabling novel approaches.

Why is proof of personhood so hot? Because it sits at the intersection of AI and decentralized identity. The threat of generative AI deep fakes has accelerated the search for a sustainable Internet-scale solution.

In a seminal 2024 paper called Personhood Credentials, researchers proposed using a decentralized architecture based on verifiable credentials and zero-knowledge proofs.

Now the Ayra Association, Customer Commons, Trust Over IP, and DIF are coming together to work on just that: a people-powered privacy-preserving proof of personhood called First Person Credentials.

This session will cover the design goals, trust model, UX, go-to-market strategy, and how to get involved.
