IAM in Telenor -- Strategies and Execution

Business Case Study
Wednesday, May 11, 2011 15:00—16:00
Location: Ammersee II

Telenor is a thought leader in Telecom in Europe. Telenor is the 6th largest mobile carrier globally with over 40,000 employees, 20,000 partners, across 14 countries. Telenor is a global company with both tightly and loosely coupled subsidiaries and has had many of the very typical challenges for the area of IAM. These include standardizing and normalizing the sets of users, for enabling provisioning and easy access to collaboration services from various operating companies, as well as external users. Additionally, over a number of consecutive years, Telenor has strived to comply with internally defined regulations for supporting SOX efforts for multiple systems.

IAM is currently developed and managed by Telenor Key Partner (TKP), a Shared Services Centre for Telenor Group. Going from a completely manually driven process-oriented organization to a fully automated systematic and self-regulating model has been a major challenge that TKP spearheaded to overcome. To hold and increase its market share internally in Telenor, TKP has instituted policies and procedures with best practices and a complete Identity and Access Management (IAM) solution. For Telenor Business Units, the prospect is reduction of overall administrative costs, as well as mitigation and reduction of security risk exposure.

As of today, TKP has deployed a group wide Single Sign-On system for Telenor group applications (including external partner registration and federated access to cloud applications), as well as access request workflows and SOX access certification processes provided as a service to Telenor Business Units. The latter platform is currently being deployed for Telenor Norway, covering almost 10.000 users and several hundred systems. With this platform, TKP is in a strategic position to deploy almost any facet of IAM functionality as a service to Telenor´s Business Units.

This Keynote will address the development of group wide IAM services over the last few years and the strategies for going forward. The keynote will highlight the challenges involved in proving the value of IAM for the involved parties, and evaluate the success of the deployments.
