NSA and Snowden - a Useful Contribution to Information Security Awareness?
- TYPE: Keynote DATE: Tuesday, May 13, 2014 TIME: 15:00-15:20
We all knew already before Snowden´s revelations, that it technically is possible to intercept our analog and our digital communication, and to scan and store our online activity profiles. What surprised was the sheer volume of these activities.
The good thing about Snowden´s revelations is, that it has significantly risen awareness on the fact, that privacy really matters in times where the viable business model in the internet seems to be based on surveillance. This has still to prove to extend beyond a short period of attraction.
However, some companies and institutions seem to overreact with a most probably temporary refraining from newer technologies and Cloud Computing is among them.
We have to use this awareness hype to increase resilience in a structured way. This will hopefully have to include jurisdiction awareness starting from eID also reaching out to provider duties but also a certain “need to know” principle where providers and Cloud companies certainly have no need to know for sensitive content.
In his keynote, Austrian CIO Prof. Dr. Reinhard Posch will give us his view on the future of information security.
