Advisory Note: Selecting your cloud provider - 70742

Report Details

The ready availability of cloud services has made it easy for employees and associates to obtain and use these services without consideration of the potential impact on the organization. Therefore, in order to ensure good governance over the use of cloud services, it is imperative that organizations create and communicate a policy for their acquisition and use. This should be supported by a simple, fast and reliable risk based process for cloud service procurement and complemented by providing appropriate training employees and associates.

When acquiring a cloud service it is important that the business requirements for the service are understood and that the cloud service and CSP (cloud service provider) is selected meets these needs. The process for requesting IT services should include cloud based services and this process should be sufficiently quick and user friendly that it is not bypassed by lines of business. It is important that selection process considers the non-functional requirement like compliance, risk and security as well as the potential benefits. These non-functional requirements also follow from the business needs.
The first phase of the process for using cloud services is to evaluate the readiness of the organization and the organizational IT. This is important because many of the aspects of the cloud service selection process imply that the organization has already a reasonable level of information and IT governance in place.
