Julian Wilson Head of Data Services

Ecospend

Julian’s career began at Apple in the late ‘80s where he worked on various advanced technology projects such as: the world’s first Set Top Box, launch of Newton [forerunner to the iPhone] in Europe, Internet games console and other. He left Apple to join AT&T Unisource in 1996 where he conceived funded and built what was arguably the first ever ‘digital cash payment’ service for mobile phones. It assumed a world where digital cash applications would be part of our SIM cards [Mondex and VisaCash et al]. In 1999 after raising $5m from US venture capitalists and the Dutch Government, Julian led a management buyout of this technology to create SmartAxis BV. After a couple more Internet start-ups focused on identity and mobile data, Julian joined Barclays engineering team in late 2013. At Barclays much of his work focussed on the building blocks of crypto currency. In 2014 Julian and colleagues in Radbroke published 3 patents globally for their work on tokenisation of FIAT currencies and tokenisation as notarisation [of data assets]. Julian left Barclays in July 2019 to build a self sovereign data service on top of an Open Banking platform at Ecospend. It is this project which he will discuss today. Julian describes his role as ‘putting an Internet Lens’ onto service and business strategies.
