Historically, Microsoft had aligned itself to the Active Directory as the central component for the authentication and authorization of users. With the acquisition of Zoomit, entry into the Meta Directory market followed, resulting in the MIIS (Microsoft Identity Integration Server). With the acquisition of the company Alacris back in September 2005, technology for administrating certificates was acquired. Today, Microsoft offers a combined product for administrating digital identities and certificates with the Identity Lifecycle Manager (ILM).
