Short analysis: Oracle´s takeover of Bridgestream

By acquiring Bridgestream, Oracle adds to its Identity Management functionality Roles Analysis  and Role Management features, which have received little attention before. Role Management plays a major role particularly when it comes to the realization of compliance rules, but also in view of a high degree of security. With Oracle having worked together with Bridgestream on several projects, Oracle users will soon be able to benefit from this acquisition.

Oracle is planning an integrated solution which makes it easier to realize a connection between business processes, including the defined business roles, and the IT systems on which they are based. Bridgestream will also play a significant role with Oracle´s GRC solutions (Governance, Risk, Compliance).

KCP believe, however, that first of all Oracle´s Identity Management customers will benefit from the acquisition because of the existing interfaces and experience in this field.

We are sure that by this takeover Oracle will succeed in advancing its position in the GRC market, although Bridgestream does not dispose of  a set of regulations comparable to the very sophisticated – even if mainly SAP-centered - SAP GRC Access Control solution. But Oracle is giving a clear signal by its acquisition that its intention is to seriously address this market segment.

The takeover will also provoke an interesting move of the Role Management market in general. During the past few months, many producers have significantly extended the Role Management functions integrated in their products. On the other hand, there are quite a number of specialized vendors in this market. Oracle´s takeover of Bridgestream will increase the pressure, particularly on the producers well established in the Identity Management market, to improve their Role Management functionality either by pushing their own development activities or by acquiring other companies. Looking at it this way, there seems to be a high probability of other specialized vendors being taken over.
